Now that you've completed your internship, and you have your license to practice, it's time to get your private practice started. One of the first orders of business will be to choose a name for your therapy practice. Unfortunately, that can be one of the most daunting tasks you'll have to deal with. After all, there's a lot of thought that needs to go into the selection of the name your private practice will be known by. Once you choose the name, it will be difficult to go back and change it, especially once your practice is up and running. We chose the name, iTherapy, LLC. Here are four steps you should take when choosing a name for your private practice.

Be Comfortable with the Name

When it comes to choosing a name for your therapy practice, the first thing you need to do is make sure you're comfortable with the name. All your legal documents, professional records, and business cards will display the name. The last thing you want to do is choose a name that you'll end up hating, or that will take up too much space on your letterhead. Before you commit to a final name for your private practice, give yourself some time to pick one that you can live with.

Avoid Difficult Names

While you're picking a name for your practice, and you're making a list of the ones you'll be comfortable with, don't forget to consider your future clients. You don't want to choose names that are difficult to remember, to spell, or to pronounce. You also don't want to choose a name that doesn't necessarily go along with the type of practice you'll be opening. When choosing the name, be sure to choose one that your clients can relate to, and that won't cause them undue stress and difficulty.

Try It Out of Your Friends

Once you've selected the name you plan on using for your therapy practice, me sure to give it a trial run. Print out a small number of business cards with your chosen name and hand them out to your friends. Take one of the cards and place it somewhere in your home where you'll be able to see it several times a day. Giving the name of your therapy practice a trial run will help you ensure that you choose the best name for it.

Make It Permanent

As soon as you have the name selection set in stone, you'll need to take steps to make it permanent as soon as possible. One of the first things you'll need to do is purchase the rights to the URL. That way, no one else can get online and purchase the domain name before you can. Second, establish a social media presence, by setting up pages using the name of your private practice. Finally, secure your business name, licenses, and permits with your local and state government.
