Most people have been pulled over for speeding at least a few times and a lot of those people have, indeed, been given a ticket for the offense. If you are ever pulled over for speeding, there are a few rules you should follow regarding speeding and traffic tickets.

Be Kind to the Police Officer

When a police officer pulls you over, it is normal to feel frustrated and maybe even a little angry. But no matter what you are feeling, you must be kind to the officer. Apologize, be honest, and cooperate with the officer's request. The officer does have the ability to let you get away with just a warning, and the best way to ensure this happens is to be nice. If the officer does still give you a ticket, just accept it. You were, after all, breaking the law by speeding. If you later choose to fight the ticket, you will still have a better chance of getting it reduced if you were kind to the officer.

Plead "Not Guilty"

Once you are given your ticket, you will have to show up to traffic court. When this happens, make sure you plead "not guilty" to the ticket. If you do, most municipalities will reduce the ticket to a parking violation and perhaps require that you attend driving school. This is better than having to pay the full cost of a speeding ticket and having points put on your license for the offense!

Hire a Lawyer for Offenses of More Than 30 Mph over the Speed Limit.

If you were given a ticket for traveling more than 30 miles per hour over the speed limit, then you should contract a traffic attorney sooner rather than later. Such a charge usually comes with several points on your license and a huge fine. Municipalities are less likely to reduce such a ticket than one for 15 or 20 miles per hour over the limit. A good traffic attorney, however, will work with the court to get the charges reduced for you.

Learn from the Experience

After you get a speeding ticket, take it as a wake-up call! Slow down so that you do not end up with another ticket. Even if you got the ticket reduced, you do not want the headache of having to show up to court again. If you, make sure to immediately call a traffic law attorney first.
